cookbook review: Zombie Cupcakes by Zilly Rosen

Author: Zilly Rosen
Publisher: Andrews McMeel
Soft Cover : 80 Pages
Photos: Yes

Chapters/Sections: Introduction, Basic Recipes, Zombie bits & pieces , An individual section for each of 16 unique Zombie Cupcakes, Index

Fun Features: The section on making Zombie Bits & Pieces explains how to make the fun little extras for the tops of the cakes or to scatter across the table as decoration or however you'd like to use them.  It includes maggots, teeth, gravestones & crosses, flies, rats, knives, baseball bats, crowbars, and shovels.  Totally creepy!!  Plus, the Basic Recipes section highlights icing, frosting, piping gels, fondants and more.  It's not just about the zombies.

(a few of the) Recipes Destined for my Kitchen:  Zombies Rising (Mud Cupcakes), On the Loose (Applesauce & Caramel Cupcakes), Eye Poppers (Almond Cupcakes), Brain Food (Honey Cupcakes)

My Thoughts/Review:  This cookbook is totally fun and completely detailed.  It's a Halloween/Autumn Season essential weapon...imagine the parties you'd throw (or crash) with these irresistible little cakes that are dripping with blood, brains, eyeballs, and body parts!  But the greatest thing about this book is that author Zilly Rosen (aka "Cake Lady") really knows her stuff.  Zillycakes, her bakery in Buffalo, NY is testament to her talent. Not only are the cupcakes fun and creepy and irresistible to look at, they also sound delicious.  Each one in this book has a different flavor profile/base from White Velvet to Almond to Gingerbread to Key Lime.  And each has a different frosting or icing from Royal Icing to Italian Meringue Buttercream to Chocolate Ganache.  This book is a can't-miss for all of you Halloween-lovers, Horror-movie aficionados, or fun-lovers out there!

  5. Halloween is our favorite time of year and this book looks like so much fun. All the cupcake flavors sound great, but the white velvet sounds especially interesting.

  7. I love making spooky cupcakes for whatever children I have around at Halloween. Not only are they real fun to make, they usually have a lot of decorations which children usually love. And I've seen more than one grown up stealing one or two..
