#EatingIndiana

What makes a person "from" somewhere?  Were they born there?  Were they raised there?  Did they move there and start a family?  As someone who never really knew how to answer that question, I've always sort of dreaded being asked it.

You see, I was born in sunny Southern California.  I'd love to claim that I was "from there", but really I'm not.  We left before my memories begin.  I spent most of my childhood in Michigan; but we did move around a bit.  The city that I lived in for the entirety of my elementary school "career", and a year into middle school (which was 7th grade there), is typically where I claim to be from.  But if I think at all about it, that doesn't seem right, either.  I've spent more than two-thirds of my life somewhere else.  We lived somewhere else in Michigan for a couple of years before moving to Indiana.

I started sophomore year of high school in Indiana.  I graduated from that same high school in Indiana.  I then high-tailed it back "home" to Michigan for college.  When I left college, I moved with friends to Wisconsin.  I was only there for six months before moving back to Indiana, where I've lived ever since - for going on 17 years.  That's more than half of my life, yet for some reason, when people ask me where "I'm from" - I've never claimed Indiana.  I've always said, I'm from Michigan, but I live in Indiana.  I mean, I live in a border town - it's barely Indiana anyway, right?

While it's true, that I'm a Michigan girl at heart - I live in Indiana.  And unless something truly life-changing happens, I will be for the foreseeable future.  It's time that I accepted Indiana.  So I've decided to embrace it; to explore the bounty that it has to offer.  That's what this series, #EatingIndiana, is all about.

Join me as I dive into all that Indiana has to offer.  From local farms and orchards, to restaurants, vineyards, distilleries, bakeries, farmers markets, artisans, to Indiana-based companies (from the tiniest to the largest), and so much more.  I can't wait to eat Indiana.

Do you know have an Indiana-made/grown/produced food-related product or company that you'd like to see featured on #EatingIndiana?  Please contact me via email (girlichef at yahoo dot com), I accept recommendations and samples.
