Have you ever cried watching a documentary about farming? I mean, if you had, it'd be okay. I mean, we've all done it. Right? No? Just me? That's fine. I'm okay with possibly being the only person who cried while watching this month's Food 'n Flix selection...a documentary...called The Biggest Little Farm. The Biggest Little Farm tracks the life of John and Molly Chester as they start on the daunting "adventure" of a lifetime in 2010. And as John tells us in the film, it all begins with a promise to their rescue dog, Todd {sniff}.

Peppered Shepherd's Pie | Sweeney Todd #FoodnFlix

For this month's round of Food 'n Flix, our host, Kimberly from Coffee and Casseroles invited us to head into the kitchen and pull our recipe inspiration from the vast selection of Tim Burton's filmography. I actually wound up watching a few this month—Sleepy Hollow, James and the Giant Peach (for the bazillionth time), and Sweeney Todd (for only the 4th or 5th time). I also contemplated watching either Dark Shadows...which I'd forgotten I actually owned until I was hunting through my dvds...or Big Fish, as well.

I've actually created recipes inspired by a few of Burton's films in the past...Beetlejuice, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands, and Sweeney Todd. I had some fun recipe ideas from both Sleepy Hollow and JatJP, but alas, the current state of the grocery stores did not allow me to bring those ideas to fruition (but hey, there's always later). But I was able to create something inspired by Sweeney Todd once again, with only ingredients I already had on hand. So, that's a win.

(Freakin' Worth It) Apple Crumb Pie | Supernatural

Somehow how it's been a week already, which means it's time for another Supernatural Thursday, where I share recipes inspired Supernatural (which is currently airing its 15th and final season). I know you can't fault me for sharing another pie recipe, right? I mean, the more pie the better. Amiright?

Like last week, I'm pulling inspiration from the first season, this time episode 11, Scarecrow. Sam and Dean finally make contact with their dad when he calls them with an assignment.  They learn that each year, during the second week in April, a couple goes missing in the small town of Burkittsville, Indiana. The boys get into a fight over Dean's "blind faith" in John, and wind up going separate ways. Sam takes off as Dean goes to investigate.

Triple Apple Pie | O Brother, Where Art Thou? #FoodnFlix

This month for Food 'n Flix we watched the 2000 Coen brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?  Set in rural Mississippi during the Great Depression, it's full of Grammy-award winning catchy folk tunes (I bought the cd way back when and can still sing all the songs right along with the movie), and scenes from the American South.

But did you know that it's also loosely based on The Odyssey by Homer? You know, the one that kids around the nation dread reading in school. I think that I'd heard that before, but had forgotten until our host for this month, Debra from Eliot's Eats, reminded us in her Food 'n Flix invitation. So, not only did I go back in to watch the film for the first time in years with an eye towards the food, but also on the lookout for references from the epic poem. And boy did I find lots of both!

So, last Wednesday came and went without a coffee klatch post (on my blog, but do check out Chef Sarah Elizabeth's coffee cake muffins and discussion). It was just a bit of a crazy with Halloween on Monday and my birthday on Thursday; most of the week I didn't even know what day it was. But I'm back today to discuss the final episode of Gilmore Girls.

Technically I finished the episode almost 2 weeks ago, but I've watched the episode over no less than 5 times since then. While there was some finality to it, there wasn't quite enough to leave me feeling satisfied. It felt a bit rushed—let's call it open-ended closure (a very fine oxymoron).

I've been a major slacker on the Friday Pie Day front for the past couple of months (though I have shared a few pies on other days), but I think these little meat pies mostly make up for it.

I can hardly believe it, but I only have ONE episode of Gilmore Girls left to watch. I could have watched the series premiere and included it in today's post—it's a mere 38:00 long. However, I wasn't quite ready to be finished, so I'm going to devote next week's coffee klatch to share my thoughts on the way things ended and my overall thoughts on the series.

I told myself that I was only going to watch one season of Gilmore Girls this week. But alas, I have no willpower when it comes to the town of Stars Hollow. I watched another two seasons, which means that I only have two seasons to go and am way ahead of schedule. I'll wind up kicking myself for it when I finish and have to wait too long for A Year in the Life.

But hey, what's a girl to do? Today I'll be recapping seasons four and five. Did I mention how much food there is in this show? Aside from coffee, which is a food group in and of itself, there's always inspiration to be found in Sookie and Luke's kitchens, Friday night dinners, and even movie nights.

Let's talk pie today. More specifically, let's talk pie crust, which seems to be the part of the pie that scares off most would-be pie makers. Somehow today is already the last Friday in June, and although I'm always happy to see #FridayPieDay arrive, I'm having a hard time reconciling that I have no idea where this month went. But alas, I do have a delicious pie inspired by a fun book series to share with you today, and that is what's important.

I happen to love cozy mysteries, especially when they revolve around food. Imagine my delight when I came across a series called the "Charmed Pie Shoppe Mysteries" by author Ellery Adams. What makes me like them even more is that they contain another little element that I love woven into my food and mystery stories—magic!

Well, the inevitable has happened. It's been in the 80's and muggy all week long. And, of course, that means it's time to start complaining about the weather. But the arrival of heat also means to arrival of fresh local fruit and berries. When I saw a bin stacked full of beautiful little orange-colored orbs at the market the other day, I immediately scooped some up with pie in mind!

Cherry Pie Milkshake inspired by The Outsiders | #FridayPieDay

I'm stepping outside of the box today and sharing a derivative of pie for this month's edition of FridayPieDay. I originally made this with the intention of sharing for a "favorite '80's movie-inspired" post I did earlier this month with Kimberly from Coffee and Casseroles, but I watched a couple and wound up sharing something inspired by License to Drive instead. Fortunately that means I can share this Cherry Pie Milkshake that was inspired by one of my favorite '80's movies (and books), The Outsiders, with you today!

If by some chance you're not familiar with The Outsiders, it's a story set in Oklahoma in the mid '60's—a time when "class wars" were a pretty big problem. It revolves around a lovable (and super cute*) group of "Greasers" from the north (poor) side of town and the "Socs" [pronounced: soh-shis] from the south (rich) side of town.

"Shag Apple" Pie for Two inspired by The Walking Dead

Tonight is the night! Season 6 of The Walking Dead was packed with so much good stuff. Lots of story development, lots of action, lots of suspense, and lots of food! I think food has been much more visible this season since we're further into the apocalypse and "stores" are dwindling. I'm guessing that tonight's focus won't be on food, it'll be on finally interacting with Negan face to face. Which means that months of waiting to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan's beautiful face on Sunday nights will finally come to fruition. Even though I'll probably hate him.

A few other things that I'm hoping will be at least somewhat covered are *SPOILER*:

• Tara coming back to Alexandria and finding out that Denise was killed.
• Finding out the fate of Daryl (please be okay...please be okay...please be okay...) and the rest of the group being held by Dwight and buddies. 
• Maggie's agony (again, please be okay...please be okay...please be okay...).

Triple Cherry Pie inspired by Twin Peaks | #FridayPieDay

About one month ago, I finally watched Twin Peaks. The first episode originally aired when I was a freshman in high school. I vaguely remember it coming out, but I think I was too young to be on the in where it was concerned. I've thought about watching it here and there over the years, but there were two things that really made me decide that now was the time to watch it.

The first being that there is a 25-year special coming out sometime soon—this year I believe. I wanted to be ready for that. But the real push actually came from a podcast that I recently discovered called Fiction Kitchen Podcast. I listened to a few minutes of their Twin Peaks episode before deciding that I really wanted to know what they were talking about...so I hit stop and binge-watched Twin Peaks before coming back to listen to that (or any other) episode.

Blueberry Thyme Pie inspired by North of Here

Today I'm hosting a book tour stop for the novel North of Here by Laurel Saville. The story centers around 4 characters and is divided into sections, each of which contain a period of interaction between 2 of them that trickle outwards and affect all of them. And while I did enjoy the way it was broken up, and the eloquent writing, I wasn't as fond of the book itself.

I don't know what it is, but lately I've found myself choosing books that are a bit unsettling. I'm very much an escapist reader by choice and want to be transported away from the dismal and despressive. But this book lays both on heavy. Plus, the main characters are an entirely unlikable bunch, with Dix being the only port in the storm.

Easy Lobster Pie | #FridayPieDay

It's the last Friday of the month, and that means it's time for another Friday Pie Day! I'm not sure if you noticed or not, but I missed it last month. Life's been crazy (what's new) and I just couldn't make it happen last month. Which is such a lame excuse, I know. Does life ever really settle down? Anyway, I think I'm making up for it today...because...LOBSTER! I brought out the big guns.

I was lucky enough to have 2 pounds of beautiful lobster meat to create with recently. I knew I'd be making Lobster Rolls with half of it, and I decided to try something else new (to me) with the other half. I came across a recipe for a super simple lobster pie in a booklet that was sent to me from Lobster Anywhere (you can find the original and some more tempting lobster recipes here), and made it with a few slight variations.
