Food & Drink Quiz Friday #15
This dessert classically consists of ice cream enclosed in a layer of sponge cake and an outer layer of meringue that are then frozen until ready to serve, at which time it is placed into a very hot oven to brown the meringue. Both the meringue and the sponge cake act as insulators (keeping the ice cream from melted) due to the trapped air in their cellular structures.

Although present before 1876, that is when the dessert was served at Delmonico's Restaurant in NYC with the name, in honor of the USA's newly acclaimed territory.

Used to make all sorts of different foods like tapioca, flour, and chips, this root must be cooked properly before consuming in order to destroy the cyanide compounds found naturally in its raw form. And apparently a small number of people, especially those with latex rubber allergies, are also allergic to this plant.

This co-product of the manufacture of cheese or casein comes in a couple of different types. The sweet variety comes from the making of cheeses that use rennet to produce them, like Swiss and Cheddar. The sour (or acid) variety is produced when making softer cheeses that use acidic products like vinegar, lemon juice, or citric acid in their production, like ricotta and cottage cheese. Both varieties of this co-product have many uses and benefits.

Food and Drink Quiz Friday 10: What is the name of the fruit produced by the Blackthorn shrub?
This thin-fleshed black fruit with a purplish-blue waxy bloom resembles a plum and has a highly astringent flavor if eaten raw. It is most often used in different sorts of alcoholic beverages like "mock" port wine, Pacharan, and Bargnolino, although you probably know it best by its inclusion in a certain type of gin liqueur (which bears the name of the fruit). It is also delicious made into jams and pies, and can be preserved in vinegar.

That's 3 whole liters! Large bottles of champagne are named after Biblical figures, and this one is named after two kings of Israel (the first generally thought of as the founder of the Kingdom of Israel). This size bottle is popular for weddings since, though large, is still fairly manageable to both chill and pour.

This type of seed is one of the oldest oil seeds known to man and is highly valued due to its exceptional resistance to rancidity. The seeds are a source of essential nutrients like omega-6 fatty acids (mainly linoleic and oleic), contain high amounts of protein and dietary fiber, and are rich in B vitamins, manganese, magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc.

A phrase made popular from the tale Arabian Nights references the way the pod of this seed bursts open when it reaches maturity.

Now available fresh or tinned, Laverbread is rich in minerals and vitamins, including B12. It is also high in protein, iron, and iodine, and low in calories. Traditionally it was eaten as part of a miner's breakfast before a long day at the pits. It was also recommended for women and children who were suffering from malnourishment.

Made from two simple ingredients (sugar and the nut in question), marzipan is mentioned in Persian text dated all the back to the year 850. More than likely, it was around for many years before that. There are other varieties of marzipan made now that use other nuts, but I'm looking for the "original" nut today.
