Palmiers | Midnight in Paris #FoodnFlix

Palmiers | Midnight in Paris #FoodnFlix
It's that time of the month again; time to hop into the kitchen and create something inspired by a film...this month's film being Midnight in Paris, as chosen by our May Food 'n Flix host Debra from Eliot's Eats! So, much like Debra, I'm not a big fan of Woody Allen. That said, this is one film of his that I can tolerate, and maybe even slightly enjoy. I've seen it once before, and probably bits and pieces here and there on television, but this time I sat down to watch it with my eye on the food.

Except that there wasn't all that much food to be found. There were small mentions of it here and there—baguettes, James Joyce eating sauerkraut and sausage, and acknowledgement of a shared love of Indian food and pita bread. You can glimpse people eating in restaurants, parties, and even in hotel rooms (fruit and eggs?), but you really have to pause and stare hard to try and figure out exactly what it is they're eating most of those moments. I did glimpse a pretty white macaron sculpture with a dove perched atop, but it was far too sweaty here this week to attempt meringue.

Okay, so you know what a TBR pile is, right? It stands for "to be read", referring to a person's literal or figurative ever-growing reading list. I have a huge one. I also have a list of television shows that, while not as long, is starting to rival it. So, I figured maybe that would be called a TBW list, you know, "to be watched"...except I googled TBW and decided I couldn't call it that.

I'm pretty excited to announce that this month kicks off a new project I'm embarking on with my friend Lora from Savoring Italy. Together we'll be experimenting in the kitchen with the oldest wheat known to scientists*—Einkorn.

We both have our reasons for wanting to learn more about this grain whose wild form has been traced back tens of thousands of years, mine being several. I'd read that einkorn was a nutritious grain that contained higher levels of protein and essential fatty acids, and that it was easier to digest than modern wheat. Since its nutrients are better absorbed, people wth gluten sensitivities are often able to consume einkorn without the belly and digestion issues (although it's not recommended for people with celiac disease or those who have allergies to wheat or gluten).

Double-Ginger Molasses Cookies
Every year OXO supports Cookies for Kids' Cancer during Pediatric Cancer Awareness month, donating up to 100,000* to support the cause. I'm happy to once again join them in baking a difference as I share some great OXO baking products that I used to test out a delicious recipe from the soon to be released Dorie's Cookies from Dorie Greenspan!

In case you're not familiar with the cause, Cookies for Kids' Cancer was founded by two OXO employees who were "inspired by their son Liam's battle with pediatric cancer, a disease which claims the lives of more children in the US than any other disease. Cookies for Kids' Cancer provides inspiration and support to allow anyone to easily get involved in fundraising to find a cure for pediatric cancer."

Polvorones de Naranja | Frida #FoodnFlix meets #CooktheBooks

Polvorones de Naranja
This month, Food 'n Flix meets Cook the Books once again. Both the movie and book selection are stories based on the life of Frida Kahlo, and seeing how Mexican Independence Day falls this month (September 16), it's the perfect time to bring some Mexican and Frida-inspired recipes to the table.

If by some very slim chance you're not familiar with Frida Kahlo, she was a Mexican painter known for her 143 bold and surreal paintings, 55 of which were self-portraits—and also for her unibrow. She was a communist sympathizer, a (bisexual) feminist, and a fiery personality who was married twice—to the same man, fellow Mexican painter Diego Rivera. Although they were separated by more than 20 years in age, and had an infamously tumultuous relationship, both admitted to the fact that they were soul mates.

Dumpster Cookies inspired by The Walking Dead

Dumpster Cookies
This post has what I consider to be the biggest spoiler from the first half of season 6 of The Walking Dead - so if you don't want to me to ruin it for you, you should go check out these zombie finger cookies instead of these dumpster cookies right away!

Okay, so if you're still reading, that means you're all caught up or that you don't care about the best show on television. No judgement. Let's talk dumpsters. Specifically glorious dumpsters that save the life of your (my) favorite character. Everybody told me that there was no way Glenn survived that mob, but I held on to the hope that he was still alive. After all, Glenn represents hope lately, and the writers just wouldn't rip all hope out from under us would they?

Gluten-Free Chia Seed Peanut Butter Oat Cookies

Gluten-Free Chia Seed Peanut Butter Oat Cookies
I don't know much about gluten-free baking. It's one of those "one day I should figure this out" kind of things...I just haven't figured out which day yet. So, when Carrington Farms asked me if I'd be interested in sharing their delicious and healthy cookie recipe that also happens to be gluten-free, I thought it was something I should try out for myself first (and then share the results with you if I liked it).

Guess what? I liked it. I liked it alot, actually. I stayed pretty true to their recipe, which can be found on the back of the current packaging for their chia seeds, I did add a little salt to the recipe (as I do 99% of the time in sweet baked goods) because it enhances the flavors. Their recipe calls for optional chocolate chips, which I considered leaving out entirely since I'm not usually one to add chocolate to my peanut butter cookies...but I figured I was already adding oats and chia seeds, so why not give it a go. But I also wanted to try them without, so I added mini chocolate chips to half of the batch.

Eggnog Gooey Butter Cookies - An Old-Fashioned Christmas book tour

Eggnog Gooey Butter Cookies
Welcome to today's stop on the Old-Fashioned Christmas book tour! I'm happy to be sharing this heartwarming book-slash-cookbook with you today, as it's a perfect representation of the holiday spirit. I'm the first to admit that my holiday spirit has dwindled a bit with age. I blame it on consumerism which leads to stress...if you let it. I try not to let it, but it took a toll on me for a while. I think now that my kids are getting a bit older, it's gotten easier, slowly returning that spark to my attitude once the day after Thanksgiving arrives.

I adore lights twinkling against the snow and through warm, cozy windows. I love holiday baking to a soundtrack of Christmas tunes. I'm a sucker for Christmas movies of any sort. Plus, is there anything better than having the entire extended family trapped in the house with a crackling fire and a buffet of food on Christmas eve? Okay, that's a loaded question - but you get my point. I also love to see the spirit of giving at the forefront of everybody's thoughts.

Zombie Finger Cookies inspired by Hocus Pocus #FoodnFlix

Zombie Finger Cookies
This month for Food 'n Flix, we are watching the 1993 family Halloween flick, Hocus Pocus. I didn't see Hocus Pocus when it originally came out. I'm guessing that's because that was the year I graduated from high school and started college, so it probably wasn't even a blip on my radar at that point. I have caught it on t.v. quite a few times over the (22!) years since, though. But I think this may be the first time I've ever really sat down and watched it with intent.

It's definitely a cute movie for the season. Bette Midler is fantastic because...well...she is Bette Midler. Sarah Jessica Parker is an all-out goofball, but a lovable one. But my favorite characters are probably an adorably young Thora Birch as Dani and Doug Jones (Hell Boy, Falling Skies) as the lovable zombie Billy Butcherson.

In true 90's fashion there are plenty of stereotypes represented in the film: stupid bullies, the new kid in town with a younger sibling who falls for the pretty girl, a talking black cat, aloof parents, and witches with flying broomsticks (and mops and vacuum cleaners...). But personally, I'm always in the mood for cheese, so I'm okay with it.

There aren't a whole lot of food-centered scenes, though. You see pumpkins, a jello mold, cheese puffs, and plenty of Halloween candy. There's mention of Mummy Scorpion Pie and Scrod (fish) in breadcrumbs and olive oil. I thought a "witches brew" sort of drink served in a bubbling cauldron could be a fun thing to make, as a nod to the sisters' cauldron.

Billy Butcherson loses his fingers
Ultimately, I chose a scene with the resident zombie, Billy. Billy follows the kids through an underground tunnel in which he has to lift a manhole cover to climb out of. As he looks around with the cover still held up, he hears a motorcycle coming, and as to quickly duck back underground. Well, all of his fingers don't quite make it—they're severed as the manhole cover bangs shut on top of his hand, leaving zombie fingers sitting in the road. This scene (just over 50 minutes into the movie) is the inspiration behind my zombie finger cookies!

You'll often see witches fingers cookies this time of year, and I went into the process with those in mind. I used a fairly basic spritz cookie recipe (the kind you see during the Christmas season a lot) as the base. I wanted to tint it green in honor of Billy's lovely coloring and decided that adding some Matcha to the dough was the way to go. Witches fingers often use almonds as the nail, but I wanted a more craggy, rotting and broken sort of look, so I chose to use pistachios instead. I was pretty pleased with myself because they turned out just as I'd imagined them.

Prep Time: 30 minutes (active) + 60 minutes (inactive)
Cook Time: 14-16 minutes
Keywords: bake dessert vegetarian soy-free matcha pistachios Halloween cookie American fall

Ingredients (3 dozen)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick / 8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, at soft room temperature
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups + 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Matcha green tea powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 18 pistachios, cut in half the short way (it's good that they look craggy and broken)
  • 2 tablespoons seedless strawberry or raspberry spread, preserves, or jam
Instructions
Beat the butter, sugar, egg, almond and vanilla extracts together in a medium mixing bowl until light and creamy. Combine the flour, matcha, baking powder, and salt in a small bowl, then gradually add it to the wet mixture, beating as you go. Cover bowl and refrigerate for 1 hour before using.

Preheat the oven to 325° F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Lay a piece of wax paper on your work surface (this is essential as the dough is sticky to work with once it touches the heat of your hands).

Remove dough from the fridge. Spray a 1 teaspoon measuring with nonstick spray, then scoop out a slightly heaping teaspoon of dough onto your wax paper. Use your wax paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-like log.

Press one half of a pistachio into one tip of the log to make a fingernail; press dough around nail a bit to make it look more lifelike. Use a sharp, thin-bladed paring knife to cut a few thin lines in the place where the knuckles would be. Squeeze the dough a bit between the knuckle lines to make them jut out a bit. Transfer finger to prepared baking sheet. Repeat until all the dough and pistachios are used up. When lining up the fingers, leave at least an inch between each finger because they puff as they bake.

Slide trays into preheated oven and bake until the cookies have just started to turn golden at the edges, 14 to 16 minutes. If you're baking both trays at once, switch them from top to bottom and front to back halfway through cooking.

Scoop the fruit spread into a small baggie and cut off a tip from one of the corners. While the cookies are still warm, squeeze a thin line of fruit spread all around each fingernail; it's okay if it's a bit messy. It should just give it a sort of "light blood" appearance.

Enjoy immediately or store cooled cookies in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
